Avoid Messy Makeup Transfer When Putting on Your Wedding Dress With this Easy Hack

4 months ago 213

Laura Bermingham

Not only is this makeup hack so easy to execute, but this tiny detail will keep your wedding dress fresh and unblemished from your bridal makeup. Popular with fashion models, celebrities, and MUAs, this hack lets you get dressed without risking smearing lipstick or foundation on your dress.

This wedding dress makeup hack is particularly great for high-neck gowns, which don't leave a lot of space for your face and head to get through. However, for security, we would do this to avoid makeup transfer when putting on any light-coloured dress that needs to go over your head - bridesmaids, mother of the bride, rehearsal dinner, you name it.

Wedding Dress Makeup Hack

There are two ways to do this makeup hack, but both essentially do the same thing, as they put a barrier between your makeup and your wedding dress. Choose between an elasticated silk slip skirt which many people have at home already, or alternatively buy a protective face hood.

Both work well to keep your face and dress protected, but if we were to choose, we actually prefer to go the slip route for reasons we'll explain.

1. Using a Silk Slip Skirt

The reason we prefer a silk slip skirt is that it is longer. If you are wearing body-blurring makeup on your neck and/or décolletage, the material will cover it too, so you can safely get into your dress.

Silk is key, as it won't cause friction with your hair, helping avoid frizz if your hair has been styled (your hair stylist won't thank you for that!). When securely fastened to your gown, carefully pull the slip up and over your head; it will glide off effortlessly. Don't forget that your makeup artist has done this many, many times before, so ask her to help you.

2. Using a Protective Face Hood

Protective face hoods or masks are widely available online and cost very little. Because they are so perfect for this beauty hack, they are sold in packs with different sizes. Etsy is a good place to pick up a pack of two or three if you want to dole them out to your entire bridal party on your wedding morning, but other places sell them in packs of 50 or 100 for MUAS or models, so be careful to check the quantity before the checkout stage.

Just a few will get you through your wedding weekend and a series of dresses if you are sticking with the 'all white' wedding wardrobe trend that's so huge now.

Top Wedding Morning Tip

Forgot your silk skirt or hood to protect your makeup? No problem, simply grab a pillowcase from the bed and pop it over your head instead. Remember, if you're wearing a red lip, avoid running the pillowcase/skirt/hood against it as you take it off!

Your wedding-day makeup will mostly be long-wearing, and the final step is always a setting spray to combat oil or shine and lock down your look for longer.
